This course will appeal to internal coaches who have a willingness to try something new which goes beyond standard models, encompassing a very different way of thinking to help the client explore challenges, and an openness to a more psychological approach that involves working with clients at the deeper level of visualization, metaphor and trance work.
Clean Language was devised by psychologist David Grove in the 1980s while working with traumatic memory patients. He noticed that people tended to talk about traumatic feelings in metaphors and that when encouraged to explore their metaphors, the effects of trauma could be more quickly alleviated than by conventional therapy. Carol Wilson worked for several years with David on converting his methods into techniques which could safely be used by practitioners who have no training in therapy. Coaches find the techniques invaluable in reducing blocks and repeating behaviour patterns.
The programme comprises 2 one day modules run a month apart (or 2 consecutive days plus a conference call), allowing for 4 paired participant practice sessions in between. The course covers Clean Language questions, working with metaphor and, most importantly, teaches participants how to help the client access a different level of thinking, which can lead to transformational change. The learning takes place in a highly experiential way with opportunities for participants to witness expert demonstrations, see change happen and practise the process themselves to experience the results.

“It gave me a way to explore emotions and feelings safely, staying within the boundary that separates coaching from therapy. It was also a revelation to see where the client’s mind went to when freed from its usual verbal restrictions when exploring an issue. An unexpectedly great way of working.” – Liz Macann, Head of Executive, Leadership and Management Coaching, BBC."
Carol Wilson worked for several years with David Grove on converting his methods into techniques which could safely be used by practitioners who have no training in therapy. Carol is currently working on a doctorate in Clean practices at Middlesex University and
draws from 25 years at corporate MD and board level, including 10 years reporting directly to Sir Richard Branson. She has studies personally with the foremost thought leaders in coaching related fields, including Sir John Whitmore (pioneer of coaching), Tim Gallwey (founder of the Inner Game), John Grinder (co-founder NLP), Richard Barratt (founder of Cultural Transformation Tools), Nancy Kline (founder of The Thinking Environment). She has delivered training in Clean Language to the internal coaches at the BBC and delivered several lectures and articles on the subject. Carol is the author of “Best Practice in Performance Coaching: A Handbook for Leaders, Coaches, HR Professionals and Organizations” and has published over 50 coaching articles including a monthly column in Training Journal.
David Grove, who passed away in 2008, was from New Zealand and spent many years in the US working with patients suffering from traumatic memories. During this time he pioneered the ground breaking technique of Clean Language. He discovered that patients would often speak in metaphor when describing their experience and that the most effective treatment was to honour their metaphors by asking open questions which reflected the patient’s exact words. Over a period of years, David identified 13 questions that would least influence the patient in their metaphorical journey, and he gave this process the name, “Clean Language”
David later developed his linguistic work into spatial methods, known as Clean Space and Emergent Knowledge. Clean Language enables clients to access buried knowledge and intuition through metaphor; Clean Space does the same through literally moving people around the room; Emergent Knowledge draws upon Emergence, the science of how things work through connections, how search engines operate, and the Six Degrees of Separation.
