What is a leader?

  • What is the essence of effective leadership? The stereotype is a forceful, energetic and decisive figurehead who strides ahead, giving directions, making decisions and doling out rewards and punishments along the way.
  • However, when we think back to the leaders who have most influenced us, whether they be managers, teachers, scoutmasters or relatives, they earned our affection as much as our respect. They listened, supported, challenged and empowered us through their belief in our abilities. We knew they wanted the best for us and would go the extra mile to see that we achieved it. No they are not, yet Daniel Goleman, author of best-seller ‘Emotional Intelligence’ (EQ), researched the field and discovered that when people talked about effective leadership at work, they were twice as likely to pinpoint the ‘soft’, EQ type skills mentioned above, like listening, supporting and empowering, rather than the IQ type criteria of knowledge, and experience. When they talked about leaders, the percentage went up to 85% ‘soft’ qualities as opposed to 15% ‘hard’.
